If the Old Testament shows us how to prevent conflict, the New Testament shows us how to restore a brother after failure. Consider the sharp disagreement between Paul and Barnabas over John Mark in Acts 15. Their conflict was so intense they parted ways. Paul saw John Mark as a risk, while Barnabas, whose name means “son of encouragement,” saw potential for redemption. Here, we see that even among apostles, conflict arises, and strong, potentially divisive words are spoken.
Yet, the story doesn’t end there. Years later, in his final letter, Paul writes a powerful, restorative sentence: “Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry” (2 Timothy 4:11). The once-rejected helper became essential. This reveals the second great work of a tamed tongue: not just to make peace, but to speak words of reconciliation and restoration. Paul’s later words healed the earlier rift, affirming that people can grow and grace can cover past failures.
Our calling is to be both Barnabas and the mature Paul—to be an encourager who believes in second chances, and to have the humility to later speak words that mend what was broken. This is the way of Christ, who, after our denials, invites us back and recommissions us with His forgiving word
