From our Spirit meal, we encounter a widow in distress. With her husband gone, she faces the weight of debt and the threat of losing her children to slavery. In a moment of desperation, she approaches Elisha, the prophet of God. Rather than reprimanding her for her plight or pitying her, Elisha asks, “ What do you have in your house?” Her reply reveals her meager resources: “Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil.” Elisha instructs her to gather empty vessels from her neighbours and pour the oil into them.
By faith, she follows his command, and to her amazement, the oil multiplies until all the vessels are full.This passage speaks powerfully to the condition of our own souls. Just as the widow grappled with her troubles, we too encounter spiritual oppressions that drain us—fear, doubt, shame, anger, and grief. These are the powers that trouble our souls, leaving us feeling empty and powerless.
The widow’s act of obedience serves as a case study for our own response to spiritual struggles. She turned to God’s servant for help, demonstrating the importance of seeking divine intervention. Her faith allowed God to perform a miracle, transforming her lack into abundance.
